1990s

• In 1990, NightMare, the first-ever screamer software was released on Amiga computers, loading an image of a skull every five minutes along with a loud scream; possibly the pioneer for screamer videos today.
• On December 6, 1994, BMEZine was launched as a body modification website by Canadian writer and artist Shannon Larratt.
• In mid-1996, Jumyou Ga Chijimaru was created by Yoshihisa "Kowloon" Kurosawa. Wayback Machine was also created at this season, allowing users to archive web, video or image content.
• In 1996, Rotten.com, the world's first shock site, launched. Additionally, insurgents in Chechnya filmed the murder of a Russian soldier which circulated with the file name chechclear.asf.
• In 1997, an early VHS version of the BME Pain Olympics was created. Also in 1997, the Goatse image appeared as one of 40 images of a man named Kirk Johnson shared among the internet's gay porn community. A hacker group called the "Hick crew" acquired the collection and used one of the images, Johnson's stretched anus, to prank unsuspecting internet users. A hacker and Hick associate named Merl1n registered the domain Goatse.cx and used it to distribute the image more widely.
• On September 12th, 1996, Ricardo Lopez recorded his final tape from his video diary, where he triggers the revolver in his head and collapses on the floor after sending a letter bomb to Icelandic singer Björk.
• Adobe Flash was released in 1996, providing a platform for creating and sharing digital content.
• In 1999, Frau1.exe was considered the first screamer game created as a trojan. Additionally in 1999, Albino Blacksheep was created initially as a personal platform for Steven Lerner's creations, but evolved into hosting user-generated content. Tekzone.net was also created as another platform for user-generated content on November 29, 1999, which later became the infamous TeKZoned website.

2000s

2000

• In March 2000, Meal Schpeal founded Liquid Generation in Laredo, Texas, which gained notoriety for their Sabotage screamers, a series of online pranks that culminated in a jump scare to startle or embarrass the viewer.
• In October 2000, Ogrish.com launched as a website for hosting shock videos and images. Later that year, in December 2000, the infamous image for Tubgirl first circulated around the internet.
• The first version of Winterrowd.com, named "Winterrowd Solutions," was made in the spring 2000. The website did not contain any screamers until shortly after the rise of Winterrowd's creation, The Maze.
• During 2000, Monster.exe and McDonalds.exe emerged as .swf or program applications in the Chinese community, with the former being a screamer and the latter being a joke malicious program.
• Magic Eye was submitted as a "contributed work" of the Goatse website.

2001

• During summer 2001, scareware programs such as Hikaru.exe and Madoka.exe were created and spread in Japan.
• On July 26, 2001, the website YTMND was registered with its name derived from a line spoken by Sean Connery in the movie Finding Forrester.
• In 2001, internet troll Kevin Ealy launched Klerck.org, which hosted famous shock content including Dance.swf.
• This year also saw the release of Rate My Poo, which allowed users to view and rate pictures of feces on a scale of 1 to 10.
• Liquid Generation also introduced their Sabotage screamers this year.

2002

• During the early 2002, An animated image of a messy room became popular and circulated on various websites, including TeKZoned. Kikia, a Flash animation, was also first posted on a Taiwanese service called Kimo by Netspooky in early 2002.
• In February 2002, What's Wrong With This Picture? (often called What's Wrong?) was released, which is considered one of the most famous screamers of all time. This screamer was the first to use the famous image of a pale woman with black eyes and her hands on her face with her pinky fingers raised, which many other screamers in future years imitated.
• On October 3, 2002, Lemonparty.org was registered, inspired by the infamous Goatse.cx website.
• Nickelodeon created a Clickamajig game called "Black Licorice" on October 31st, 2002, but it was quickly removed from the website due to complaints from parents.
• GNAA, an internet trolling organization, was founded in 2002.
• Say It, created around 2002, was considered to be the first screamer to use the Regan MacNeil image.
• Reaction videos using screamers were already being used in 2002.
• Forest-wmv screamer circulated with its alternative names martian-wmv, jungle-wmv, and jungle.mp4. It was also claimed that it was hosted on Albino Blacksheep with the name forest.mp4.

2003

• The following year, the GNAA launched a series of malicious shock sites under the name "Last Measure" as part of their trolling campaign.
• On October 1, 2003, 4chan was launched by Christopher "moot" Poole as an English-based imageboard site.
• Meanwhile, Liquid Generation continued making screamers on their sites, and Flash creator MJBDiver began creating and hosting several screamers for his site Cinema du Comical Cartoon Calamities.
• A controversial Courage the Cowardly Dog Commercial aired on Nickelodeon.
• Weasel Circus released their own version of What's Wrong With This Picture?
• Thehomo.org was registered.
• Garfield's Scary Scavenger Hunt 2 was published on Garfield.com in November 2004.
• In the winter 2004, the term "Harlequin Fetus" began circulating, with the Urban Dictionary entry of it being published more than a month later.

2004

• In 2005, several well-known screamers were released, causing a sensation among internet users. One of the most infamous screamers, K-fee commercials, was aired in April 2005 as part of the Wide Awake campaign to advertise their caffeine drink.
• Zoeken, considered the first "Find the difference" screamer, was created on June 16, 2004.
• The Maze, another well-known screamer, was created in October 2004.
• On October 30th, 2004, the original Zippocat video was filmed and released on the site Ogrish.com.
• Warner Bros. created a "find-the-difference" screamer to promote their film Exorcist: The Beginning.
• Ghost in the London Dungeon was broadcast.
• Encyclopedia Dramatica was launched.
• Chris the Jack-o-Lantern was released as an animated Flash-based series by TastyBabySoup for Albino Blacksheep.
• The Castle Cat series was published on mausland.de by Felix Wiesne.

2005

• Similar to how 2004 was a huge year for screamers, 2005 was a huge year for shock sites.
• During 2005, multiple new games were released, including The Never Ending Level Game, and a large number of sequels to The Maze, alongside several shock sites such as Biglemonparty.com, 1 Ass 1 Baseball, 1 Man 1 Centipede, Heyya.org, Discharges.org, and Merry Holidays.
• On March 8, 2005, Klerck.org creator Kevin Ealy committed suicide.
• On July 2, 2005, a video of Mr. Hands was recorded.
• On October 14, 2005, TheYNC website was founded.
• The image for "Ahenobarbus Henocied" began circulating in Japan
• Ghost Caught on Tape was originally filmed, with the video being officially published to YouTube a year later.
• Jeremy Winterrowd created his second screamer Snowman Snowglobe for his site, which later evolved into a screamer collection site. The first part for "The House" series was also released.
• Meatspin and Hai2u were registered in 2005.
• Sad Jerry and Madium were published on Newgrounds.

2006

• On August 09, 2006, Bubble Wrap Maniac was released.
• On October 31, 2006, Ogrish.com underwent a significant transformation and rebranded itself as LiveLeak.
• During this year, there was a notable emergence of "hidden message" videos, including releases such as Britney Spears Hidden Message, Jingle Bells Reversed, and Silent Message.
• YouTube screamers and reaction videos began to rise in this year.
• A parody of the K-fee commercials from the Free Enterprise Fund Committee was broadcast.
• Hit the Dot was released.
• The final installment of the Chris the Jack-o-Lantern series was released.

2007

• On February 12, 2007, Lomando.com was launched.
• On April 1, 2007, Jeremy Winterrowd launched the "Winterrowd Prank Contest".
• On May 15, 2007, the full version of Scratch was released.
• On August 7, 2007, a YouTube version of the urban legend NNN Special Broadcast was uploaded.
• On August 12, 2007, the original website for 2 Girls 1 Cup was registered.
• On August 15, 2007, Super Mario 64 Big Star Secret was uploaded before its manhunt from Lost Media Wiki.
• On August 17, 2007, the "Offended" article was published on Encyclopedia Dramatica.
• On September 16, 2007, an edited version of the Coyote Attack Video was uploaded to YouTube by Scary For Kids.

2008

• Originally registered on March 4, 1997, K-k-k.com changed to a shock site.
• On July 16, 2008, Bloodshows was launched.
• Chomp.avi was uploaded, generating speculation from the aforementioned site.
• On December 4, 2008, Jarsquatter was uploaded on eFukt.
• Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) created Shock.swf for their annual Mystery Hunt.
• A first reaction video of "3 Orangutans 1 Blender" was uploaded.

2009

• On April 1st, 2009, Albino Blacksheep created Lidanude.jpg for April Fools Day.
• In June 2009, a recorded video of a man with a split face after a failed stunt over a bridge was uploaded online.
• In 2009, following the death of the renowned singer Michael Jackson on June 25 due to a lethal dose of Propofol administered by Conrad Murray, various screamer videos related to him emerged. Examples include 1000 faces of Michael Jackson, Micheal Jackson scary pop up, and the well-known Proof of Michael Jackson's Ghost.
• On October 21, 2009, the Rick Latona "Daily Domains" newsletter advertised the goatse.cx domain for sale at $15,000, highlighting it as a "famous site" with numerous backlinks.
• On October 28th, 2009, American YouTuber and mathematics professor Matthew Weathers pulled a Halloween prank on his students, using the sample of Zoeken.
• On November 7, 2009, an ARG creepypasta-based series called Poochee and Pansy was released.
• First screamer app ILabyrinth was published on the iOS play store.
• Alexey Tatarov, the man behind Jarsquatter, uploaded another video titled "1 Guy 1 Screwdriver" on eFukt.

• During 2010, numerous "red dot" games and videos were made public, including titles like Find the Red Dot, The Red Dot Game, and Stare at the Red Dot. Additionally, various "pop-up" videos gained popularity, such as Scary pop up :L, Scary pop up ever, and more.
• On October 11, 2010, the first Minecraft-related screamer "Him" was released, referencing the Herobrine creepypasta.
• Justin Bieber became the subject of many screamers during this year, including titles like Justin Bieber Scary Pop Up, Find Justin Bieber, and Save Justin Bieber.
• On December 4, 2010, SCP-450 was uploaded.
• On December 21, 2010, the Canadian pornstar Luka Magnotta anonymously published a YouTube video titled "1 Boy 2 Kittens."
